Question: "If we are not under the law of Moses, but set free by Christ, then why did God give the law to Israel in the first place?"

Answer: To answer this question, it is important to look at how God dealt with Man from the time that

Man sinned in the Garden of Eden. In Genesis 3: 13 – 24 we read about the judgment of God

and His plan of salvation for Man through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

From Adam through his son Seth down to Noah we have a thread of names of people who

served God and obeyed Him.

After the Flood God gave the “rainbow” as His promise not to judge the world for its sin with

water again and we have the history of Man serving God traced through Shem down to

Abraham.

Hebrews 11 is called the chapter of “Faith” and in it; we read that Abraham believed in God. God

rewarded Abraham and made a covenant with Abraham that included Isaac down to Jacob

whose sons became the heads of the nation, we now call Israel.

At no time did any of the covenants take the place of the sacrifice of Jesus as the Savior of the

world. In Deut. 5: 2-3 that God had made a covenant with Israel and not with any other nation.

As Romans 2 states that the Law cannot save people, we need to accept that the Law was given

as a way of living and social behavior. In other words, the Law is given as to how we should live

and behave toward each other.

The Law cannot save us as it only points out our failures and the need for a Savior.
