Can I go on sinning?

Question: "If Jesus died for my sins, so that they may be forgiven, why can’t I continue to go on sinning? Are my future sins not forgiven either?"

Answer:During the years of my ministry I have come across this question a number of times and in fact I

have asked myself why are people asking me this question? Is this person really being honest

and sincere with himself and God? Or is this a matter of just trying to have insurance against

going to hell? To try to answer the question I think we need to go back to the Bible and

understand the meaning of some important words:

In Rom. 3:23 we read that all have sinned and that there is none righteous. So Paul has made a

blanket all-inclusive statement. We all have missed the mark and we are all faced with God’s

judgement.

Allow me to emphasize that we have all failed and that means that we cannot save ourselves

unless we take the opportunity that is given to us through Jesus Christ. This means that we

need to apply Acts 2:32 which tells us to make an about turn in our lives. We can only make

such an about turn if we accept that Jesus died for us personally and that we are forgiven.

Now in 2Cor. 5:17 we read that because we are in Christ we are new creations and that

everything has become new. Therefore the idea of continuing to sin willfully is not a part of our

new present and future life in Christ.

Paul, however does point out in the entire Romans 6 that we do have an old sinful nature and a

new nature. In this regard he states that he needs to crucify his old nature on a daily basis. This

is also backed up by the Apostle John in 1 Joh. 1:3 – 2:26. It is important to note that John uses

the word “we’ and in this passage he includes himself.

He therefore states that if “we” say “we” have no sin then we are deceiving ourselves and

making God a liar. Therefore in our new walk with Christ we need to become more like Christ

and please Him by laying off all sin and conforming to His image.

This therefore should tell us why we should not sin and even though we still do sin we will

receive forgiveness if we confess the sins that we have committed.
